Intertextuality of Divergent and The Hunger Games

Divergent (BY VERONICA ROTH) Summary

Beatrice Prior lives in a future version of Chicago where there are five distinct factions. Each faction thinks one virtue is best: Dauntless think bravery is keen, Erudite love knowledge, Abnegation is pro-self-sacrifice, Amity hearts friendship, and Candor is into telling it like it is. Beatrice grew up in an Abnegation family. But when she turns 16, she decides to join Dauntless—partly because they're cool (tattoos, piercing, leather jackets, love of Wuthering Heights); partly because she doesn't feel selfless enough to be a good Abnegation; and partly because her test result showed that she was Divergent, meaning she doesn't really fit in with any one faction.
But joining Dauntless isn't just about showing up and saying "take me." All the initiates have to train and compete to get into the faction. Along the way, Beatrice takes a new nickname—Tris—and meets a range of people. There are new friends like Al, Will, and Christina; new enemies like Peter and his evil minions; and new teachers, like the scary Eric and the hot Four. Tris has to compete to get into Dauntless, all while hiding that she's really Divergent. There's blood, violence, and some kissing (between her and Four). So, pretty much the usual high school experience.
Then, Tris figures out that the Erudite faction wants to overthrow the Abnegation government. And they're going to do so by mind-controlling the Dauntless army. But Tris doesn't get brainwashed (because she's Divergent), so she destroys the villain's plan, and rescues everyone. Except for her mom and dad, who die to help her. Bonus: the book ends with the city in complete chaos, so it's time to pick up the sequel.

The Hunger Games (BY SUZANNE COLLINS) Summary

When Kathiss Everdeen's younger sister is chosen for a pageant called the Hunger Games in which contestants fight to the death, she voluntarily takes place of her sister. During the competition she makes some important friends, but also some enemies. She has to fight her way through the games for not only her family and her best friend Gale, but the other tribute from her district, Peeta Mellark, her "star-crossed lover." Together, Katniss and Peeta navigate their way through the arena, dreading when one tribute will defeat all the others.

Intertextuality of the Novels

It’s impossible not to notice the similarities between Divergent and The Hunger Games. Both feature dystopian futures and strong female protagonists. Both are based on best-selling young adult book series and are the creation of female authors. Each features young people in very real danger where things don’t always work out for them.

You will surely find both novels to be fascinating. After reading the stories, you might observe that the books have a series of similarities and differences that allow them to be unique but equally fascinating books they are. Aside from the fact that Katniss and Beatrice loves to wear leather jackets, one similarity between Divergent and the Hunger Games is that both take place in a dystopian society, just as mentioned. A dystopian society is an imaginary or futuristic place where people lead dehumanized and often fearful lives.

Another similarity is that the protagonist aims to change or somewhat alter the government system the society decided for themselves. They feel as if there would be more to life other than the self-maid cell the society has placed themselves into.

The third similarity between these two novels is that both involve communities that are isolated and distinguished from one another. In Divergent the society is separated into five factions, each representing a virtue: honesty, intelligence, bravery, selflessness, and peace. Members of different factions rarely associate with each other. Likewise, in the Hunger Games the nation is divided into twelve districts.

They only differ, in our opinion, would be in their way of impact to the audience. We think Hunger games has a more powerful and a long-lasting effects in a person. We honestly think it is because the storyline is much more realistically portrayed and has a greater possibility that it may happen someday in real society than Divergent, which involves zombie-like creatures in it.
